Castro and Twin Peaks (Urban Jungles)

The Castro and Twin Peaks tour is our most popular tour and heads from the heart of a historic San Francisco neighborhood to the top of the city–and back in 5 miles and 3 hours. With a great mix of city streets, parks, and dirt trails, this is a great introduction to urban hiking.

This route is all about the views, and we’ll see downtown San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Marin County, San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean from a number of scenic hilltops. We’ll also visit the base of Sutro Tower: the tallest point in the entire city.

When we’re not soaking up panoramic views, we’ll climb secret stairways, walk peaceful trails, discover quaint neighborhoods, explore an enchanting eucalyptus forest, check out an 1890s Victorian mansion, and more.

From the concrete jungle to the lush, green urban jungle, the variety of sights on this tour can’t be beat.

Other information:

  • Starts at Castro Theatre (429 Castro Street)

  • $49 pp (gratuities not included)

  • Thurs. and Fri. at 1:30 pm; Sat. at 9:30 am.

Union Square, Nob, Hill, Chinatown

The Union Square, Nob Hill, and Chinatown Tour explores 3 of San Francisco’s most central and historic neighborhoods in 3 miles and 2 hours.

The hike starts in Union Square, now famous for shopping, but once a gathering place for celebrating Union victories in the Civil War.

From here, you’ll take in the sights of Nob Hill—the Fairmont Hotel, Grace Cathedral, and the Cable Car Museum—learning about San Francisco before and after the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906.

From Nob Hill, you head to Chinatown, visiting the Chinatown Gate, the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, and the place where Gold Rush was announced to the world.

Other information:

  • Starts and ends in Union Square

  • $49/person (gratuities not included)

  • Fridays at 9:30 am

Coit Tower and Lombard Street (Tales of the City)

The Coit Tower and Lombard Street tour is a 4½ mile, 2½ hour stairway-filled adventure through the North Beach, Telegraph Hill, and Russian Hill neighborhoods.

You’ll see two of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks – Coit Tower and Lombard Street – plus you’ll walk two of the city’s longest and most beautiful stairways: the Filbert and Greenwich Street Steps.

You’ll explore city parks where we’ll see both the Golden Gate bridge and the San Francisco Bay Bridge from a single vintage point and get our absolute favorite view of downtown San Francisco. You’ll also learn the history of Levi’s jeans and see the church where Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio took their wedding photos.

We’ll visit places that not even the locals know, such as one of San Francisco’s few remaining dirt roads and the peaceful pedestrian lane that inspired the Tales of the City book series about life in San Francisco from the 1970s to today.

And if we’re lucky, you might just see and hear the wild parrots of Telegraph Hill.

Other information:

  • Starts in Levi's Plaza

  • $49/person (gratuities not included)

  • Saturdays at 1:30 pm

The Presidio: From the Main Post to the Bridge

The Presidio and Golden Gate Bridge tour is a 5 mile, 3 hour hike that explores the history, art, and nature of the Presidio.

The Presidio was a Spanish, Mexican, and US military base for 220 years, and you’ll take a walk through time as we explore the Presidio Main Post together. You’ll take in more of the area’s history as we soak in stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge at the San Francisco National Cemetery Overlook.

The Presidio is also a growing hub for art. On this route, you’ll see large-scale art installations crafted by artist Andy Goldsworthy—all of which were made of natural local materials—like trees and mud.

And with 25 miles of trails, the Presidio is quantifiably the city’s best hiking neighborhood. You’ll walk along eucalyptus- and cypress-lined trails, and even duck into a redwood grove. You’ll also hike coastal bluffs until you reach the most iconic symbol of San Francisco of all, the Golden Gate Bridge.
